Staying Resilient with SilverSneakers

Terry Anderson

May 2016 Update: Thanks to Silver Sneakers, retired Pastor Kristin Anderson is still active in the pool. She received the Columbia River event’s “Oldest Swimmer” medal in 2015 and is preparing to swim it again this Labor Day!

The day was glorious. The water temperature was 72 degrees. I completed the 1.1-mile Columbia River Cross-Channel swim at Hood River, Oregon, without a hitch — thanks to the Silver Sneakers Fitness Program.

I had been swimming at my fitness center through the SilverSneakers program as a way to stay fit. When I heard about the cross-channel swim at Hood River that would take place on Labor Day, I was determined to do it.

However, the summer proved to be a challenge health-wise as I dealt with a fractured pelvis, bursitis, muscle problems, and back stenosis. I tried to train, but swimming exacerbated the difficulties so I managed only two or three times in the water before I flew west. I traveled with a cane and hoped the cold water would numb any pain. But the lure of the pool through SilverSneakers as a way to keep fit had drawn me in all year long, so I was in good shape even though my training time was limited.

The swim was top-notch. The scenery was gorgeous. The water glistened. I felt terrific at the end. I even received an award for my crossing: "Oldest Female Swimmer." Kristin Dawn Anderson, 77 years young. Yahoo!
